Computational Science

Computational and Data Science are the key technologies of presence and future. Computational methods and mathematical analysis are used for simulation, prediction, data evaluation, analysis, risk assessment, development and optimization, and can be found virtually everywhere.

Models, mathematics, statistics, data and algorithms are the fundament of our digital world. By combining mathematical and statistical knowledge with informatics, computational science and data science provide unseen new perspectives for research, economy, and for our society. Exploiting the capabilities of modern numercial and computational methods and of supercomputers, increasingly complex problems can be tackled – in economy, finance, pharmacy, medicine, R&D, natural-, environmental-, and social-sciences, bio-medicine, or engineering sciences.

Research

ICS is a major node in Switzerland for research and education in computational and data science. Imbedded into a dense network of national and international cooperation partners, ICS carries out high-level research with a general focus on computational methods for life sciences, social sciences, natural and environmental sciences, economy, and engineering.

As an interdisciplinary institute, ICS hosts a broad range of scientific activities and projects, which are concentrated in the areas Computational Science & Engineering (CSE), Computational Medicine and Life Sciences, Data Science and Computational Statistics, and Machine Learning. ICS gladly cooperates with the Swiss AI Lab IDSIA.

Graduate Education & Career

ICS offers a full-time Master Program in Computational Science and Data Science, which comprises 120 ECTS spread over 4 semesters (usual duration 2 years) and is entirely offered in English. Direct contact to the teaching professors and to state-of-the-art research carried out at ICS allow for high-level education with personalized study plans.

This unique master has been designed explicitly as an interdisciplinary education program, thus providing a superior combination of skills and competences. Graduates from our master program have exciting career prospects that range from economy and finance over medicine, life sciences, engineering, data sciences and research to management and also consulting.

High resolution propagation of seismic waves in space and time

Researchers from ICS have developed a new algorithm for representing wave propagation in a medium. The parallel algorithm running on the ‘Piz Daint’ supercomputer is the first to efficiently simulate high-resolution details at various time steps simultaneously. This markedly accelerates...

The spleen and its effect on red blood cells

The size and shape of red blood cells could be determined by the spleen, or so it would seem from simulations on ‘Piz Daint’. July 27, 2016 Based on a study done in the late 1960s, it was assumed that capillaries in the circulatory system determined the size of red blood cells. Red blood...
